"Tales of Xillia"
An utterly gripping and engaging tale of angels, demons, and those in between
Whatever your expectations might be upon seeing this story, set them aside. “Unsanctioned” blows all preconceived notions right out of the water. It’s a story that invites a reader in, and then sweeps them away with an epic, flowing narrative of prejudice, betrayal, family, friendship, love, and acts of terrorism and war. It’s an exciting, emotional ride that you won’t regret!
A highly original fantasy
“Wandering Queen” is a nice representation of differing lifestyles, where good people love and hate based on action, not on appearance – and a truly evil person doesn’t understand love at all. Plus, there’s some really awesome magic and a heroine that won’t stop until she defeats the evil!
Although I do not normally enjoy slice of life stories (Jane Austen being my guilty pleasure), I knew, from the start, that “Leaves” was going to pull me in in spite of my snobbishness. Its narrative is beautifully worked, each word chosen as carefully as the ceremonial feel of a tea-lover trying a new tea that opens the story. Then, once the main character River takes over the narration, she radiates a warmth that will make readers fall in love with her, make us want to root for her. The human details about her character (her insecurities, the pencil that she didn’t remember putting in her hair) made me smile! This promises to be a quiet ride through deep emotions, and I’m looking forward to every word of it.
The Only Half Saga continues
Although this isn’t the first book in the series, “The Devil’s Own” can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. The characters are vividly drawn, full of opinions, motivations, and even flaws. The plot is tension-driven and enthralling. D. D. Randall is an excellent storyteller, her descriptions full of beauty and utility. Enter this world of vampires, dhampirs, and blood slaves, living in a dystopian society far in our future, and find out if old ways can be changed for new.
Action-packed story, kick-ass heroine
I love the premise of this story; five young people, brought so close together through what must have been years of combat and stealth training, that they consider themselves brothers and sisters. And they act like it! There’s teamwork, there’s arguing, there’s watching each other’s backs, there’s even mind control (heh). The story starts off with a huge bang, too, in which Alex maybe meets the man responsible for her parents’ deaths and almost meets her maker. If you’re into thrillers and crime mysteries, I’d say “Tainted Blood” is for you!
